I'm not sure if I've understood what you are saying here, the comma may be
throwing me off, but the figure of 9.2K that I quoted was for zip files.

The PCMIA one that I got was the NB 56 Voice, it uses the same chip as
yours.

I agree, but it was the fact that they went bust that harmed me most. After
the modem broke for the third time I was ready to simply return it and
demand a full refund. Unfortunately I soon found out that that wasn't
possible at that point. :(
